The Great "I Am" (8:48-59)

The Two Fathers (8:31-47)

1. Slaves and Sons (8:31-36)
-The mark of authentic discipleship is knowing and practicing the truth of God’s Word. (v. 32)

2. The Genuine and the Imposters (8:37-41)
-True son-ship is validated by abiding in the works of the Father. (v. 39b)

3. The Tree and the Fruit (8:42-47)
a) Hypocrites, liars and imposters are exposed by their resistance to God’s Word. (v. 43)
b)The pathway to the Heavenly Father begins by hearing His Word. (v. 47)
c) Members of God’s True Family:
-Hear the Word (v. 47)
-Abide in the Word (v. 31)
-Know the Truth (v. 32)
-Are free from sin (v. 36)
-Practice true faith (v. 39)
-Love Jesus (v. 42)

The Second Witness (John 8:12-30)

1) Who Testifies with You? (8:12-18)
-Following Christ means knowing the testimony of the Father in Heaven and walking in it.


2) Where is Your Father? (8:19-20)
-Knowing Christ means knowing our Father in Heaven. (v. 19)


3) Will You Die to Self? (8:21-24)
-Death is God’s unavoidable solution for fallen humanity; either death to sin or death in sin. (v. 24)


4) Who Are You? (8:25-30)
-I am a follower of Jesus Christ, indwelled by His Spirit and empowered to live a life pleasing to Him.

The Sentence (John 8:1-11)


1) The Courtroom of Self (8:1-5)
-God’s intent in imposing discipline is always unto restoration; men tend to  settle for punishing the offender. (v. 5)


2) The Advocacy of Christ (8:6-9)
-The law of self-righteousness results in self-condemnation for those who are ruled by it. (v. 9)


3) The Justice of God (8:10-11)
-The complete picture of God’s forgiveness always includes the willingness of the offender to forsake their sinful lifestyle. (v. 11)
